South Bristol Energy is developing an innovative energy centre to deliver clean, lower cost heat and power to an estimated 1,400 homes and local businesses making Bedminster one of the most sustainable communities in Bristol.
about the scheme
South Bristol Energy is proposing a centralised Energy Centre that will deliver reduced emissions, lower costs and more secure hot water and space heating to the Bedminster community. The system can provide heating or cooling which is transferred from the energy centre through a network of highly insulated pipes carrying the water to each building. Every building or apartment has a heat exchange unit including a heat meter to monitor how much heat is used.
The core technology is CHP (Combined Heat and Power) gas engines that generate electricity whilst also capturing usable heat that is produced in this process. This contrasts with conventional ways of generating electricity where vast amounts of heat is simply wasted. In today’s coal and gas fired power stations, up to two thirds of the overall energy consumed is lost in this way, often seen as a cloud of steam rising from cooling towers.
Under local and national planning regulations, we have had to ensure that we meet the highest standards in emissions and noise levels. We have therefore ensure the lowest levels possible through silencer technology and catalytic converters.
By using “waste” heat, CHP plants can reach efficiency ratings in excess of 80%. This compares with the efficiency of gas power stations, which in the UK range between 49% to 52% (The Association of Decentralised Energy).
We are committed to ensuring the local community and key stakeholders are kept up to date throughout the project. We are attending a number of community workshops to discuss the community heat network and ensure that we are addressing all concerns that may arise. So far all the views expressed have been taken on board and, where feasible, have shaped the final scheme to be submitted. We are also setting up a special energy trust where we will invest profits from the community heat network into the local community. This may be upgrading selected homes with low energy LED lighting or improving insulation. If you would like more information get in touch with us directly here.
